Das Forschungszentrum l\u00e4dt am Donnerstag, 10. November 2016<\/strong>, ein zum Festvortrag <\/strong>von Dr. Emma Spary (Cambridge)<\/strong>. Sie spricht \u00fcber „Order and Object. Constructing Collections in late 18th France“<\/strong>. Beginn ist um 17:15 Uhr<\/strong> im Seminarraum des Forschungszentrums <\/strong>auf Schloss Friedenstein, der Eintritt ist frei. Eine kurze Einf\u00fchrung in den englischsprachigen Vortrag:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Historians have addressed collecting either in terms of the fine arts, attending to connoisseurs, amateurs and the art market, or from the standpoint of the sciences, looking at instruments, cabinets and classificatory schemes. Although it is well known that collectors of natural history were a subset of fine art collectors, there are few studies of natural history collecting outside scientific institutions. What did the community of natural history collectors in fact collect? Who were these collectors? How did they understand the purpose of collecting itself? These questions, which can be explored using a range of sources including auction catalogues, guidebooks, travel accounts and inventories, take on added significance towards the end of the Old Regime, within debates over the role of nature as the source of lasting and virtuous social order.<\/p>\n

Dr Emma Spary<\/strong> is a Reader in the History of Modern European Knowledge at the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge, UK. She was previously employed in Warwick, Berlin, and London. Her research interests fall within the history of the sciences and medicine in \u2018long 18th century\u2019 Europe, especially France. She is currently working on Translations of Potency<\/em>, a book-length study of drug-taking in Paris and Versailles around 1700, funded by a Leverhulme Trust research grant. Her previous publications include three monographs, Utopia\u2019s Garden<\/em> (on French natural history), Eating the Enlightenment<\/em> and Feeding France<\/em> (on cuisine and food sciences in France).<\/p>\n
