April 2016<\/strong>, stehen zwei Vortr\u00e4ge von Herzog-Ernst-Stipendiaten auf dem Programm: Andrea Strazzoni<\/strong> (Rotterdam) spricht um 17:00 Uhr zu The Insertion of Cartesianism in Medicine: the Case of Henricus Regius<\/strong> und Valeria Lucentini<\/strong> (Bern) um 18:15 Uhr \u00fcber\u00a0Die Rolle der Musik in der Reiseliteratur des 18. Jahrhunderts und die Auspr\u00e4gung nationaler Stereotype<\/strong>. Alle Interessierten sind herzlich eingeladen ins Forschungszentrum Gotha (Seminarraum im Pagenhaus, Schloss Friedenstein).<\/p>\n

Valeria Lucentini (Bern): Die Rolle der Musik in der Reiseliteratur des 18. Jahrhunderts und die Auspr\u00e4gung nationaler Stereotype<\/strong><\/p>\n

Die Bedeutung der Grand Tour<\/em> f\u00fcr die Bildung und das Selbstverst\u00e4ndnis vor allem adliger Eliten in L\u00e4ndern wie Gro\u00dfbritannien, Frankreich, aber auch dem Alten Reich ist seit Langem unbestritten. Und so ist in der Tat das Interesse ausl\u00e4ndischer Kunstkenner am Klassischen Altertum sowie an Malerei, Skulptur und Architektur der italienischen Renaissance gut dokumentiert. Aber auch Musik spielte f\u00fcr die Grand Tour<\/em> eine entscheidende Rolle in Hinsicht auf den Kulturtransfer und die Auspr\u00e4gung eines internationalen Geschmackskanons. Dieser Aspekt des Ph\u00e4nomens ist bisher v\u00f6llig unzureichend erforscht worden. Die Auswertung zahlreicher Beschreibungen von Italien-Reisen aus dem \u201elangen\u201c 18. Jahrhundert wird es erlauben, in einer \u201ethick description\u201c die mit der Wahrnehmung italienischer Musik verbundenen Stereotype zu rekonstruieren und damit die Grand Tour<\/em> in ihrer ganzen interdisziplin\u00e4ren Vielfalt zu erfassen.<\/p>\n

Valeria Lucentini<\/strong> ist Doktorandin an der Universit\u00e4t Bern und am dortigen Walter Benjamin Kolleg (Cultural Studies Programm), gef\u00f6rdert vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds.<\/p>\n

Andrea Strazzoni (Rotterdam):\u00a0 The Insertion of Cartesianism in Medicine: the Case of Henricus Regius<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Letter-Preface<\/em> to the French edition of his Principles of Philosophy<\/em>, Ren\u00e9 Descartes outlined a plan for his philosophy devising the foundational role of natural philosophy for medicine. Yet, the issues raised by the attempt of extending the \u201cclear and distinct\u201d method of philosophy to physiology and practical medicine \u2013 dealing mostly with experience \u2013 prevented him from fulfilling his plan, which was instead pursued by his followers. Later, Cartesian physiology was criticized by exponents of experimental approaches to natural philosophy, who labelled it \u2018speculative\u2019 and \u2018hypothetical\u2019. As part of my project, which unveils the critiques to Cartesian philosophy from a medical standpoint, I will shed light on the Dutch natural philosopher and physician Henricus Regius\u2019s attempt to develop a physiology and practical medicine rooted in Descartes‘ physics. I will show that Regius, striving to overcome the difficulties inherent to Descartes\u2019 plan, extended medical methodology to philosophy itself.<\/p>\n

Andrea Strazzoni<\/strong> has received his PhD in history of philosophy at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, with a dissertation on the foundation of scientific knowledge in early modern philosophy (2015). He is currently working on the relationships between philosophy and medicine in the Cartesian framework.<\/p>\n
