Ausschreibung im Projekt HERA: 1 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (Postdoc)

The fulltime post-doc position is part of the European HERA-project  „Encounters with the Orient in Early Modern European Scholarship“, which is a joint project with colleagues in serveral other institutions (Charles Burnett and Jan Loop, Warburg Institute London; Bernd Roling, FU Berlin; Gerard Wiegers, Amsterdam; Outi Merisalo, Finland) The Gotha project is called „Johann Ernst Gerhard and the ‚Harmony‘ of Oriental Languages“.

Johann Ernst Gerhard (1621-68) was a Lutheran theologian and oriental scholar (Wittenberg, Jena) of that pioneering generation that was eager to learn not only Greek and Hebrew, but also Arabic, Coptic, Syriac, Ge’ez etc. He certainly was not a first rate scholar, but a very typical one. In Gotha we have his letters (more than 2000), his Stammbuch, his travel diary, annoted dissertations, notebooks, works and his whole library – a perfect sample for a study. We aim at a monograph on Gerhard, which reconstructs his theories, networks, activities and scholarship.
